About the Artists
Elfrieda Langemann has performed lead roles with the Lamplighters (Iolanthe, Iolanthe), Berkeley Opera’s Opera da Camera (The Maid, The Ruined Maid, Barab) and San Francisco Lyric Opera (Rosalinda, Die Fledermaus, Desdemona, Otello). While living in London, she sang lead roles with the Windsor & Eton Operatic Society (Countess Adele, Count Ory, Rossini), Gemini Opera (Pamina, The Magic Flute), Opera Favorita (Lauretta, Gianni Schicchi), Beaufort Opera (Cassilda, The Gondoliers), among others, including an appearance with the London International Opera Festival as the Angel Gabriel in Cavalieri’s, The Drama of the Soul and the Body and Dorset Opera, singing the role of Almeide in Donizetti’s Gabriella di Vergy. She was the soprano soloist in Haydn’s Harmoniemesse at Sherborne Abbey and a BBC performance of Verdi’s Requiem. She sang the role of the Sorceress in a CBC broadcast of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. She was soprano soloist for the Symphony Parnassus, (San Francisco) in a performance of Knoxville Summer, 1915, Barber. She has sung in the recital series of St. James’ Picadilly, and Southwark Cathedral, in London, and St. Mary’s Cathedral, and Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church in San Francisco. In the UK, as part of a traveling trio she presented classical and cabaret programs for festivals, prisons, and hospitals, as well as children’s shows for schools. Bay Area chorister participation includes the SF Opera Chorus, SF Opera Center, SF Chamber Singers, Sanford Dole Ensemble, and San Francisco Renaissance Voices, and in Canada with the Tudor Singers of Canada, and the CBC’s A Cappella Singers. She is a recipient of awards from the British Columbia Cultural Fund, the Canadian Federation of University Women and the Bay Area Musical Arts Competition. She studies voice with Pamela Hicks.
Pamela Hicks is known in the Bay Area as a singer, voice teacher, coach, and vocal-director. A member of the music faculty at CSU East Bay since 2007, she also has a large private teaching practice in her South Hayward home studio. Over the course of her forty-year career in opera she has sung over fifty leading roles and dozens of oratorios, recitals and concert pieces with many regional opera houses and orchestras in the U.S. and Germany. She is a former grand prize winner of the San Diego Opera Center and national winner of the New York Metropolitan Opera Auditions. She has appeared locally with West Bay Opera, North Bay Opera, Berkeley Opera, San Francisco Lyric Opera, Bay Area Classical Harmonies (BACH), Lamplighters, Tri-Valley Rep, and CCMT. Favorite roles include Tosca, Lady Macbeth, Violetta in La Traviata, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, The Merry Widow and Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music (Contra Costa County Theaters Shellie Award 2014). She holds a degree in music composition from CSUEB.
Katherine McKee received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from New England Conservatory of Music, where she studied choral conducting with Lorna Cooke de Varon and voice with Bernard Barbeau. Much in demand as an oratorio soloist, she has performed with Philharmonia Baroque, the San Francisco, Modesto Symphony, Soli Deo Gloria, San Francisco Choral Society, Oakland Symphony Chorus, Camerata Singers of Monterey, Marin Oratorio, San Francisco Lyric Chorale, the U. C. Davis Chorus & Orchestra, and Sacred & Profane. A former member of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus and the American Bach Soloists, she has been a core member of the Philharmonia Baroque Chorale since its founding in 1995, and sings frequently with the San Francisco Opera Chorus. An avid recitalist, she has presented programs at The Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Music at St. Matthew’s, Pacifica Performances, Capp Street Community Music Center, Holy Innocents’, St. Luke’s, St. David of Wales, St. Clare’s in Pleasanton, and First Presbyterian Church in Alameda. In the greater Boston area she held the post of music director at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Westwood and at the Hanscom Air Force Base Protestant Chapel, and was the assistant director of the Jamaica Plain Symphony. In New York City she sang with the Gregg Smith Singers, serving as assistant director for that ensemble as well, and founded the new music chamber choir Premier. In the Bay Area she has held posts as music director at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church in San Francisco and First Lutheran Church in Palo Alto, and served as chorus master, prompter and conductor for San Francisco Lyric Opera. While on the faculty of the San Francisco Boys Chorus she conducted the Apprentice Level chorus as well as directed activities on the SFBC Marin Campus. Ms. McKee serves as Music Director of the San Francisco Renaissance Voices and St. Bede’s Episcopal Church in Menlo Park, and teaches private voice lessons in San Francisco and Menlo Park. She is a student of Sylvia Anderson.
One of the San Francisco Bay Area’s most well rounded musicians, James Meredith conducts the country’s acclaimed Sonos Handbell Ensemble. A native of North Carolina, Mr. Meredith received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Tulane University. As a solo pianist, vocal and instrumental accompanist and conductor in America, Europe and Asia, his work has brought him into contact with such artists as Elly Ameling, Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, Olivia Stapp, Frederica von Stade, Eleanor Steber, Evelyn Lear, Gerald Moore and Dalton Baldwin, whose assistant he has been in summer masterclasses at the French Conservatory in Nice. He is on the faculty of the renowned Young Musicians Choral Orchestra program where he is Director of Vocal Studies.
Shelley Lynn Johnson is a performer, director and acting coach. As a busy singing actor, she has performed numerous leading musical and non- musical roles all over the Bay Area, recently as Mrs. Pascal in “House of Yes” with Custom Made Theatre. Favorites include: A Little Night Music, Man of No Importance, She Loves Me, Annie, Fiddler on the Roof, and A New Brain. Non-musical stage work includes leading roles in The Clean House, Smash, Sister Cities, As You Like It, Much Ado About Nothing, Winter’s Tale, Cripple of Inishmaan, Sylvia, and Lettice & Lovage.
